Here at Easier House, we know a conservatory is one of the nicest and low maintenance rooms to have in your house. They let in so much light and can be incredibly peaceful rooms. However, because of the glass roof of a conservatory, they can become quite dirty. And once they’re dirty it compromises some of the wonderful natural light coming in.

Preparation for cleaning

The first thing with any cleaning project is to make sure that you’re fully prepared. When it comes to cleaning a conservatory roof, you will need to decide how you’re going to access it. Obviously standing on a conservatory roof isn’t a good idea, especially if the roof’s made of glass. You could crack a panel and end up having to replace the roof!

Access – Three Choices

  • Use an extendable brush and do it from the ground. (best option)
  • Use a step ladder to get up to the roof and lean over. (not recommended)
  • Buy a conservatory ladder designed to do the job. (best for professionals)

If you choose to clean it from the ground like some window cleaners then you will need a long tool which will allow you to reach the entire roof effectively. You’ll also need to consider several other products that will help you get your conservatory roof in tip-top shape.

Conservatory cleaning kit

There are many products that will help keep your conservatory roof spotless. You can buy a total roof cleaning kit which will have everything you need, or you can make do with these products;

  • A sponge with an extendable handle to help you reach properly (you can choose for either an ordinary one or one which will pump the soap and water for you).
  • Soap. In many hardware or DIY stores, there are special soaps designed for getting the dirt off conservatory roofs and help keep it cleaner for longer.
  • A brush. For conservatory roofs which have a big build-up off dirt, you may find a brush can scrub away some of the tougher grime than a normal sponge. Be careful that the brush isn’t too abrasive and will scratch the roof instead of cleaning it.

Conservatory cleaning tips

Now that you’ve got all of your products sorted, it’s time to start cleaning. Start by making sure you’ve got all of your products ready to go – there’s nothing worse than getting started only to realise you’ve forgotten something. It may be worth getting someone to help you clean the roof – especially if you’re going for the ladder method.

  • Use a lot of soap and water in order to remove the stubborn grime and dirt on the roof.
  • It’s a good idea to start on one side and work methodically in order to make sure you’re getting every bit of dirt.
  • For those harder to shift spots, use the brush and a liberal amount of soap and water.

For cleaning other bits you can use the sponge.

Once you’re satisfied with all of your work then you can rinse off the roof with a pressure washer and some clean water. If you’ve missed any spots now is the time to go over them with a small sponge and water. Once you’re done, it’s definitely worth having a look from ground level and admiring your handiwork. Checking from below is a good way to make sure that you haven’t missed anywhere.

Clean a conservatory roof without leaving marks

How to clean a conservatory roof inside?

Once you’ve cleaned the outside of the conservatory, you will want to make sure that you focus your attention to the inside. There is no point in having a gleaming outside if the inside is still just as grimy!

The method of cleaning the inside is quite similar to the outside. Using a stepladder, you will want to use soap and water. However, it’s important that you’re containing the water more inside, as you don’t want it going everywhere.

  • Fill a bucket with warm soapy water.
  • Using the sponge, dip it into the water and wring it out.
  • Wipe over the surfaces of the conservatory roof.
  • Using a squeegee, wipe any excess water off the panels.

How to clean a polycarbonate conservatory roof?

There are many types of different conservatory roofs out there. Many are made of glass, but those which were built more recently are made from polycarbonate. Most of the cleaning process is the same although you may want to be more gentle with polycarbonate panels.

Instead of using a brush you may want to consider just using a sponge or cloth in order to clean the panels. If the brush is soft enough then it could work, but you have to be more wary about scratching the surface. With a polycarbonate roof, it’s important to change the water often as dirty water can leave streaks which will make your roof look a mess.

Cleaning polycarbonate roof panels

If you’re trying to clean the panels of a polycarbonate roof then it’s important to make sure that you aren’t going to damage the panels. Although polycarbonate roof panels are generally made to be tougher and more resistant than standard glass panels, they can become scratched more easily. Taking extra care when cleaning polycarbonate panels will make sure that you aren’t left with horrible scratches that will ruin the look of your conservatory roof.

Exterior Cleaning

Final thoughts

When cleaning your conservatory windows, make sure that you are being careful and have taken every precaution. Using a sturdy ladder, and making sure you’re on solid ground are good places to start. Don’t try to do it on your own, having a second person there to help will make it far safer for you. They can also tell you whether you’ve missed a spot!

Using the correct tools will make your job much easier too, as will prepping everything beforehand. There are many tools and products designed specifically for cleaning conservatory roofs – have a look in your local hardware or DIY store to find specialist kits.

Once you’ve cleaned your conservatory roof inside and out, make sure to do the windows too! There’s no point in putting all that effort into roof cleaning if the windows are going to let you down!
